 Itinerary

Day1: Imlil 1745m to Toubkal base camp(3207m)6-7 hours

In the morning, you will enjoy a private transfer from Marrakech to the village of Imlil, located 90 km away, which takes about 2 hours. Upon arrival, you will disembark from the vehicle and, accompanied by your mountain guide, begin your trek through the Mizane Valley. Your journey starts towards the village of Aremd and then leads to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Aremd, situated on a moraine ridge overlooking the valley, is the largest village in the area, showcasing a vibrant blend of traditional terraced agriculture and streets often filled with goats and cattle. As you continue eastward and cross the floodplain, you will follow mule tracks that guide you up into the towering rocky cliffs above the valley. After crossing the river, you will reach the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, a site popular with both tourists and pilgrims (though only Muslims are allowed to cross the stone bridge to access the shrine). From this point, the trail steadily ascends, winding its way up to the snowline and leading you to the Mouflons Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m), where you will spend the night.

  •  Walking time: 6-7h

  •

Day 2: From Base Camp (3,207m) to Mount Toubkal (4,167m) | Duration: 9-11 hours

You will begin your ascent of Jebel Toubkal, the tallest mountain in North Africa, early in the morning around 4 am. The path leads you up the southern cirque, crossing a stream just above the refuge, and then traversing various scree fields where you'll have to navigate through a seemingly endless stretch of boulders and rocks. While the walking is generally straightforward, the scree and altitude may pose challenges. Nevertheless, the stunning views along the route make the effort worthwhile. Once you reach the ridgeline, the plateau is only a short walk from the summit, where the breathtaking scenery awaits. From the top, you'll enjoy unobstructed views in all directions, stretching from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas to the north and down to the Anti-Atlas and Sahara to the south. After taking in the sights, you will retrace your steps down the mountain and return to Imlil before being transferred back to Marrakech in the early evening.

  •  Walking time: 9-11h

 What to expect

Accommodation

The Toubkal base camp refuge, Les Mouflons, is situated at an elevation of 3,207 meters and provides both single and family rooms, each featuring private showers, along with seven dormitory options. Typically, you will be placed in a dormitory, but upon request, we can attempt to arrange for you to have a private room with ensuite facilities, subject to availability and without any guarantees.

Meals

Lunches will be provided on both days, along with dinner on the first day and breakfast on the second day.

Difficulty and terrain

The ascent to Mt Toubkal is challenging yet does not require technical skills. Participants should be in good physical shape and possess strong trekking experience, although mountaineering expertise is not necessary. The landscape is diverse, and the trails are frequently exposed to sunlight. Within the mountains, the path navigates along historic Berber trails that may be elevated, steep, narrow, and uneven, making the ground uneven underfoot.

Certain sections of the hikes are located above the snow line. We will supply crampons if necessary, particularly during the winter months. Since there are no marked trails, a local qualified mountain guide will accompany you. This region is quite isolated. It is advisable to be an experienced walker in good physical condition to fully enjoy this hike.

When to go

You can begin this trip any time throughout the year, as it offers the flexibility of self-guided holidays without set dates. You are free to start your journey on any date within the season. The hottest month in the Atlas Mountains is July, with an average temperature of 29°C, while January is the coldest, averaging 13°C, but July also enjoys the most sunshine, with about 11 hours per day. Some hiking trails remain above the snow line all year.

  • Private transportation from the airport to Marrakech on the first day and back to the airport on the final day is not part of our package, but it can be arranged for an additional fee. This is mainly because many of our clients tend to spend a few days in Marrakech either before or after their trip, whether booked through us or on their own.
